Serve a population of citizens who are English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, many of whom are new to our country and community.  We work with adults and young people alike to share our cultures, and provide assistance where appropriate.

Organization Description: Our mission is to provide full resettlement, employment for self-sufficiency, and English instruction for new refugees. Basic immigration services provided on a sliding scale.

Volunteer Needs: Serve to extend casework services with clients from war-torn countries, teach English as a second language, mentor a family, or assist in the office.

Volunteer Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm; Some evening/weekend service in refugees' homes

Special Restrictions/Requirements: Minimum requirement: 2 hours a week; criminal background check if working with minors.

Organization Description: Founded in June 28, 2017, the Hampton Roads Refugee Relief Inc (HR3) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to assist the refugees with creating a new home and life in the United States. HR3 provides supportive services such as housing, food, health, and employment to refugees relocating to the Hampton Roads area.

Newport News Public Schools has eleven schools serving students who require ESL education and support.  To work in one of the NNPS ESL schools:

1) Contact CNU's NNPS Service Track Coordinator shannon.mcwilliams.15@cnu.edu 

2) Complete the NNPS volunteer forms (form 1 and form 2) and indicate your interest in working in an ESL school on the form;

3) Either email the forms directly to jeremy.wall@nn.k12.va.us or bring them to the Center for Community Engagement (1st floor, DSU).
